Town Council Spotlight - James Sullivan

Posted

I had the pleasure of interviewing Vice Chairman Town Councilor James Sullivan for this issue of Town Council Spotlight. I cannot say enough good things about this long time Hooksett resident. He has devoted himself to the town of Hooksett with a personal focus on its history.

Sullivan has deep roots in Hooksett, having moved here at the age of 2. Growing up on Castle Drive, he developed a strong connection to the town and its government from an early age.

His grandfather, D. Everett Allen, served as a selectman in Hooksett from 1932 to 1945, and it was this family legacy that inspired Sullivan’s own path into local politics.

Sullivan earned his degree in political science from Keene State College and was first elected to the town council in 1993 and remained until 1999. After a brief hiatus, he returned to the council in 2011, where he continues to serve today.

In addition to his role on the council, he also serves on the Hooksett School Board.

Sullivan’s passion for Hooksett’s history is one of his greatest interests. He enjoys any activity related to preserving and sharing the town’s past. As a member of both the Historical Society and the Heritage Commission, he’s been actively involved in creating a display featuring authentic Hooksett memorabilia in the town hall.

One of the biggest challenges, according to Sullivan, is ensuring that all rules and procedures are properly followed – especially given the many regulations involved.

Sullivan is committed to keeping voters informed and engaged with what’s happening in the town. For instance, he advocated for the creation of an official Hooksett Facebook page, which was launched earlier this year.

Sullivan’s goal for Hooksett’s future is to continue making progress while maintaining balanced development. When he’s not busy responding to resident inquiries, attending meetings, or exploring Hooksett’s history, Sullivan volunteers with the Lions Club and at the Puritan Backroom.
